Many years of experience have helped to develop Dan’s skill and his understanding of wood’s unique qualities. Before he begins to work on a new piece, he envisions the basic form that will remain after the excess has been cut away. Then, as the wood spins on his lathe, he trims away the outer layers, revealing grain patterns, colors, and other features previously hidden beneath its surface. With each new discovery, he revises his original visualization so as to create an aesthetically pleasing form while preserving the wood’s most striking qualities.

Many of his creations are crafted from the salvaged trunks and branches of native trees that have been downed by high winds or other destructive forces. Those that have lain on the ground for a period of time usually have begun to decompose, adding character and leaving irregular voids in the wood. In many of these, Dan will inlay semi-precious stones, metals, and contrasting woods, which will enhance and accentuate the natural beauty of the piece.
